The Skills Center
165 Eighth Street at Natoma
Any student who is homeless or low-income can participate in Skills Center classes. Classes include reading and writing, GED preparation, computer skills, vocational guidance and a culinary training program, CHEFS.
Orientation
Each student is asked to come to an orientation. To sign up for an orientation, stop by the Skills Center to find out about the next available one.
Assessment and Placement
Each student meets with a teacher to assess interest and academic level to find the appropriate level of instruction.
Computer Labs
The Skills Center has open computer labs on Monday and Wednesday from 6pm - 9pm. The labs are open to anyone; you do not need to be a current Skills Center student to participate.
Vocational Guidance
Vocational guidance is available to Skills Center students, to clients living in the Sanctuary or Next Door shelters, and to residents of ECS supportive housing sites.
CHEFS: Conquering Homelessness through Employment in Food Service
CHEFS is a six month culinary training program for homeless adults and those living in supportive housing sites. It is by formal application only. Qualifying students receive a three month classroom/kitchen training and upon completion are sent to a three month internship in an outside agency or local business. Interested people should stop by the Skills Center for more information, or the CHEFS Program at 705 Natoma.
